I have a extra rear end with carrier beam that I obtained a couple of years ago when I bought my Vet. I have a 1989 automatic and was told the the extra rear end was a 3:07 that he was going to put in but never got around to it. It was used and he didn't know what year Vet it came from.
I took the rear end and never really looked at it until a couple of weeks ago when I saw a date stamped on the passenger side of the differential of
10 25 79 ? That date makes no sense to me unless C3s have similar looking rears?
The other side has a number that looks like C3?531 (looks like 6 digits but I can't make out the third number...maybe 9?)
The carrier beam has two numbers, 14008656 and 38421.
Someone painted on the top of it "308". Overall it looks very similar to what is in my '89 except I did notice that the fill plug was in a slightly different location.
Can any one tell me what I have here? (Or direct me somewhere that I can figure out what this is?)
Is it aluminum? The "C" cast number sounds like a Dana number. 1980, up C3s used a Dana 44, but I don't think they interchange with C4 diffs. If it IS aluminum (Dana) not cast iron (GM), there will be a 6 digit number stamped on it, followed by another 1 or 2 diget number. The first 2 digits of the 6 digit number will be, "60". Like: 60xxxx-xx. The dash, may or may not, be there. If I can get that number, I can give you a lot of info on it.
Those are the numbers I'm talking about. "605491-7" is the "bill of material" number. My book only goes to 1991, and I don't show the "-7". the 605491 started in 1990, and IS a 44 ICA. A "-2" was a 3.33, trac Lok, and a "-3" was a 3.45, Trac-Loc, for 1990 and 1991. Possibly later years, too. With that number, I can help.
It is definitely aluminum. I'll clean it up a little more and look for some other numbers. I definitely am not seeing anthing like the numbers in Mr Mojo's photo.
turning this thing seems to indicate it is somewhere around 3:07 or 3:08 but I still can't find any numbers like described. I took a closer look at the six digit number I did find on the side and it now looks like C3?584. I don't see any other numbers on this thing??
Your "C3?584" is a casting number. MrMojo's numbers are stamped in. I need the stamped number I described to help. There is no question on the ratio. The ICA Dana carriers were available in 3.07 not 3.08. Also all Corvette Dana's are posi. You can check that by trying to turn the side yokes independently from one another.
