Just a few things that I could suggest after the excellent and correct advice already expressed. If your gonna do this over a week or two, or whatever, a manual is nice, but not neccesary. I used zip ties, color coded, and in multiples to mark electrical connectins.
You NEED JACKSTANDS :smash: Good ones, preferably four! You need a lot of height to drop the tranny and put it back in. Get some (Buy, Beg, Borrow, Steal) some heavy duty ones! That are at least about 12" high before extended. I did it with two (2 ton, started with 4, {about 9"} and 2 heavy duty {borrowed}, but I feared for my life :jester
MAKE SURE YOU ARE SAFE UNDER YOUR CAR! Enjoy and make sure you double check all your bolts ;)
Just to put your mind a little at ease. All your electrical connections (wires) have been in place for 17 years. When you pull your harness back away from the firewall to complete the installation they just about fall where they need to go. This is not say don't worry about paying attention, just don't let it be intimidating. Also for the purpose of correct installation at the assembly plant, by and large most connectors will only fit one connection under the hood. Even those that appear to be identical are usually keyed with a slot or tab.
Don't get TOO worried about trying to REMEMBER every little detail to the point it becomes intimidating and distracting.
Thank you everyone for your help. My nerves are definitely more at ease now than they were last week about doing this myself. I will let everyone know how the engine swap goes. Dropping in a 360 hp, 416 ft/lbs vortec TPI engine...can't wait!
