I was told that the stock exhaust pipes on our LT1/LT4s only look like 3" diameter pipes but actually have another smaller pipe inside of them. Since I have never taken my exhaust apart, I do not know if this is true or not. (I am waiting on my Magnaflows to arrive for installation) My common sense tells me that is CRAP! And how about the factory resonator, what does it look like inside? Does the "H" pipe or "X" pipe replace the resonator? What are the benefits? Thanks.

Re: Is this bullcrap or what? (TorchRedXCVI)
Not sure about smaller pipe, but I thought they were 2 3/4" pipes and necked down to 2 1/2 at the muffler, and maybe at the resonator if I remember correctly...
i dont know about the newer ones, but the older ones, like my 85 have what you describe as an inner pipe. the front 'y' does, i hacked into it last week.
Yes this is :bs And I can only tell you that at first I only replaced the mufflers on my 96 with Magnaflows. It kinda sounded annoying at cruising speeds. Then I had the resonator removed and replaced with straight pipe and a H or crossover up by the transmission. It now has a deep mellow tone and I love it. Hope this helps.
Thanks for the info guys! My Magnaflows should be waiting for me when I get home. Too bad the engine doesn't arrive at the shop until tomorrow.
