Default 96 LT1 overheating

Stock engine using Evans engine coolant. In traffic, the digital coolant temperature reading hit 258 degree then the fell back to 200 degrees. Normally the reading would top out at 230 before dropping down. I believe the THERMOSTAT is culprit. Anyone concur??
Water pump has been replace within the past year.

Thermostat is a good start. Easy to replace. Since the temp is going down the fans work. It just might be the thermostat is opening too slow or sticking. I was getting some funky readings from mine and I changed it with the recommended one from the factory and the engine ran cooler.

Good luck.

Who changed the water pump? It's common practice to replace the thermostat at the same time.

Your radiator may be in need of some serious cleaning (debris lodged in the fins)

I would think that anything in the 190-200 range would be considered normal for steady state cruising this time of year, and its always going to come up when sitting in traffic. 258 is way high, and if that's happening regularly, I would do two things - clean off the front of the radiator and change the thermostat.

Check your fans.
That's what mine did, 255 in traffic, then back down to normal when I got going.

Probably your T-stat just as you are thinking. A cheap fix if it is. I would throw the $15 at it and see if it solve your problem. BTW did your fans come on as normal?
