Yet another "no start" topic. This one is unique. It's not VATS, it's not the starter, it's not the battery. Here is the situation:
Put the key in the lock, turned the key, nothing. The lights come on, the security light does not flash, radio comes on. Try to turn it again, nothing. Check to make sure clutch is all the way in, nothing. Take the key out, retry. Nothing. Pop the hood, run a wire from the starter to the ignition relay (behind the battery), car starts right up.
While I am glad I can get it started, I would much rather use the key to start it instead of hot-wiring it.
Could it be the starter solenoid? The key lock itself? Any suggestions are appreciated.
Did you by-pass the safety switch? I am leaning to the starter solenoid because that is what you bypass if you jump to the starter. The safety switch interrupts the key and if the safety switch were bad you would not be able to key start it; even if you by bypassed the solenoid :)
The safety switch is bypassed (thanks to the previous owner). When I turned the key, it smelled like something fried in there. I was talking with my buddy, he was in the car with me, and he just told me that he saw smoke coming out of the keyhole. So I am leaning towards the lock itself.
That's not good....you can't properly track electrical problems with factory diagrams on modded wiring. I suggest you get the diagrams, find out what was changed, restore it to stock wiring;including safety switch. Then, you have a chance to work on the other stuff like the key switch. If not, you may find yourself frying a new switch. My .02 cents :seeya
