My Haynes repair manual says that for 84-87 Vettes, the self-locking caliper bolt must be replaced with a new bolt when the pads are changed. I've heard that there are some errors in the Haynes books...Do I have to replace that bolt on the caliper when I replace the pads?
My '88 GM Shop manual says to replace the caliper bolt & crush washer when you remove the caliper, e.g. to replace a caliper or rotor.
For front pad replacement only: replace & lube the caliper pin & c-clip, put some anit-rattle compound on the back of the pads and replace the pad clips.
If you have a bolt on the rear brakes that must be removed to replace the pads, replace it with a new one.
The book says to replace the TPS adjustment screws if you loosen them too. I've loosened them 25 times now or so and they tighten just fine. And so do my caliper bolts I've taken off twice now as well. I think GM is in the fastener business.
If you got the extra $$, buy the bolts. Personally I don't trust reusing mine, only because they have been off and on so many times, some with power tools other by hands. My next brake job will have me replacing the caliper bolts, front and rear. Of course I'm replacing everything except the calipers.
If you are just changing pads on the front, you don't have to remove the bolts holding the caliper bracket, just remove the pin, slide the caliper out and replace.
