I have a 95 six speed with about 30k miles. At about 65mph a humming noise\vibration starts from the rear, seams like the center but hard to tell. Gets worse as the car approaches 80 (my sweetspot on the hwy). Vibration is speed related as it occurs with clutch in or out, engine on-off, any gear. I have done the following:
- balanced tires but have had another set of wheels\tires on the car with no change
- replaced wheel bearings, 170 ft-lbs on the axle nut
- replaced axle u-joints
- replaced one axle that appeared to be out of round
- replaced drive shaft u-joints and had drive shaft balanced
that leaves me with the rear end but the family GM mechanic says cant be the problem because 30k miles and no noise.
Re: 95 has rear end vibration...need help (shottel)
Did you have the rear wheel bearings checked? Could also be that the balance weights fell off of the driveshft. Perhaps you need to have that checked out good luck!
Re: 95 has rear end vibration...need help (shottel)
Are these newer tires? Sometimes when a belt breaks loose in a tire, you'll get a very loud and annoying hum/noise. You can check this by running you hand over the treads of the tires, Run your hand the same way the tire rotates. If you feel any parts that are lower/higher I would try some newer tires.
Usually rear ends make a loud whining noise when they go out. Could be the rearend bearings.
