Has anyone replaced their center resonator with a 2 in 2 out muffler like a borla or a magnaflow unit? I want to do the magnaflow mufflers but i am afraid of them being too loud on highway speed (had bronco with glasspacks and am happy that the vette is quiet) Would replacing the center resonator change the sound or make it quieter or louder? I know an X-pipe will give me better performance but i dont want the increase in loudness. Thanks
Re: Replace resonator with 2 in 2 out muffler? (deiaggie)
Why replace the resonator? There really isn't any gains to be had by doing that. The factory resonator is a dual in and out muffler. It has two 2.75" perforated cores going through the case. Replacing it with some kind of baffled muffler will increase back pressure and reduce performance.

well i was looking at something like a magnaflow 2 in 2 out with built in Xpipe. I am not doing this for performance gain, but if there is too much resonance for my likeing. Also i wanted to do this to build my own cat back system and have a shop bend me some tubing for fairly cheap. That magnaflow muffer is only like $120 also.

Just recently went with Magnaflows and SS tips. The first thing I did to my exhaust was to remove the resonator. That did not give me the sound I wanted.
So I now have mufflers and no resonator. There is some resonance, but I can tell you I still can hear the stereo and the sound of the Magnaflows makes the Corvette sound like it should. Painting mufflers and exhaust black, two dual outlet SS tips, Magnaflow mufflers cost $322.00 installed.
Remember though, I was just looking for a better sound, not to expensive, good looks and I can still hear the stereo. My ears are 56 plus years old but the sound I hear is sweet! What you hear, in your Corvette might be a different story. But I betcha if you heard my Magnaflows, it would put a smile on your face . :steering:
Re: Replace resonator with 2 in 2 out muffler? (deiaggie)
I have Magnaflow on my 96 and before I had the resonator removed I think it had resonance. Then I had resonator removed and replaced with straight pipe and a H pipe. Now it has a deep mellow tone when cruising and sounds great at WOT. I had all that done for about $400. This might sound dumb, but before I had resonator removed I looked up the word resonator in dictionary and the definition is to resonate sound and reverberate. To me that says resonator = NOISE
Re: Replace resonator with 2 in 2 out muffler? (GR8FUL1)
well my theory is that if it has too much resonance with the stock resonator, and a xpipe will get rid of the resonance but increase the loudness, if i got a muffler that had a built in Xpipe like the magnaflow and replaced the resonator with it, it would combine both aspects of the resonator and the xpipe, leaving it quieter than just an xpipe but with less resonance than the factory resonator.
or what about getting an xpipe and then adding 2 small straight through mufflers right behind them?

:iagree: I have thought of this too. I think it would work, and I'd be curious to hear the exhaust if you replaced the resonator with that magnaflow muffler (with the x built in) and then ran just the pipes to the exhaust tips.
