I am getting tired of this stupid tach problem. When I start the car, it does the normal...goes way up above 6K and then back below 0. Never reads anything either 0 or above 6K. I have tried everything that I can think of. I checked the coil, cleaned the metal between the coil and the tach "clip" on the distributor cap, removed the tach filter, replaced it with a new one, checked the wiring/ground, tried running the tach-to-coil straight through (without the filter). Same results everytime.... no tach readings. I am assuming that I need a new dash? Anybody else with any ideas?
Do a quick check for posts about dash related problems which were put up over the past few days. "Dark dash and engine won't start" (or similiar words) and one other. In those posts, I posted two links to web sites that have dash repair information.
One of those sites may include a fix for your tach problem.
On my 90 I had trouble like what you describe ..I first removed resistor on line near distributer..that didn't work :nonod: So I had GM dealer order me a refurbished cluster..I was worried it would affect mileage but it turns out mileage is stored in ECM. I left resistor off with new cluster and tach works beautifully now :hurray: good luck..I feel your pain
Do what I did, I have a 90 and my tach was always reading about 900 rpm too high. I replaced the instrument cluster with a 93 unit. Aparrently GM new they had a problem with the 90 (and 91 also) and did whatever was necessary to fix the problems. Plus as an added bonus the 92-93 clusters have more detail to the gages. You CANNOT use the 94-96, only the 92-93 on 90-91. Just my .02
It was like $172.00 but I replaced it myself..I think they quoted me like $225.00 if they did it....but you know, I'm just one of those guys that doesn't want anyone elses hands on my baby. ;) Oh yeah, the refurbished by GM units are supposedly updated and bugs worked out.
