Default burning wires

recently i replaced the fusible links coming off the starter on my 84 vette, but the large link needed to be 10 or 12 gauge which i couldnt find, so i used a fuse. first i tired 40, 30, then 20, but the wires seem to smoke when i have the car running, they dont smoke when the car is just in accessory with radio etc on, i assume i have a short somewhere near the starter, or is the 20 amp fuse still to big?
any ideas
thanks
matt

Definetly sounds like a short. The 20 amp is still to large though. When replacing a fuseable link-if you can't find it-the rule of thumb I believe is measure the length of the fuseable link-it's usually like 8-10 inches then runs into a larger wire-if you have 10 or 12 guage wire you should replace the fuseable portion with something 2-3 guages smaller, like 14 guage. This allows the 14 guage to melt before it reaches the 10 or 12 gauage-simply acting like a fuse. Hope that's right. But I got fuseable link wire from Nappa and I believe Autozone carries it.

thanks rick
okay, 20 still to large, i can try a 10 amp
and i know about the 2 guage smaller, but the wire itself is 8 gauge(i think) it was pretty big, in fact i took it to just about evey part store in town and they all said nothing that big
thanks
