Ok, I let my wife use my vette again. She says she doesn't do anything wrong but it seems every time she drives it I find something wrong after. So this last time she found a way to break my OD shift button. It will still go into OD by itself but I cannot engage or disengage with the button. Anyone know where I should start to look for the problem? I was thinking maybe it was a simple linkage problem somewhere?
I am NOT letting my wife drive my car untill further notice. :yesnod:
Re: 4+3 OD Button non functioning any more (BlkMagik)
Sorry I've been away for a few days.
You'll need to remove the center console to check things out.
1. Remove speedometer bezel.
2. Remove radio bezel.
3. Remove center console bezel.
4. Remove 4 screws from bottom of center bezel to disconnect shift boot.
This much will let you see the switch. It is down towards the bottom of the shifter. If you want to remove the switch you'll have to.
1. Pop shift patter off with a screwdriver, be careful they get brittle with age and are about $20 to replace.
2. Remove the T-bar under the shift pattern with some needlenose plyers. Count the # of counterclockwise revolutions it takes before pulling gently to remove it.
3. There is a very small nut on the bottom of the switch holding it to the stalk. I forget what size it is, but it is small.
4. Unclip the switch from the wiring harness. You may have to pull the wires up some to find the connector, mine was stuffed under some of the padding.

This is probably an easy one, if it's like the problem I had with my OD button on my '86. And if not like mine, the guys have another fix I'll mention.
My OD button would work depending on where the shifter was. Then it wouldn't operate at all!! Turns out the "zip strap" that holds the wire against the bottom of the shifter was so tight, the wire broke.
If that's not the case for you, the button, which pushes a switch at the bottom of the shifter has broken. http://www.newark.com/ is the source for a new one.

Shoot - that's an easy one. It's on the firewall, next to the master cylinder vacuum booster. There's 2 relays there, one behind the other. The first one you can get to is the OD relay and the one behind is the fuel pump relay.
