Yes, the 86 has such a brace. I don't have a photo, but it's about 6" to 7" long and runs from the back of the compressor to the very first header bolt.

The header bolt is a bolt/stud combination.

Cool, but im now unsure about were it mounts on to the compressor itself. The A.C. lines are in the way to be able to bolt from the comp. to a header bolt.

On the 86 the A/C bracket has a bolt that is installed from the rear (windshield side) of the compressor and runs all the way through the compressor to the front part of the bracket. This long bolt is located between the hoses.

That's the bolt that the brace goes on. The brace then runs almost straight down, and slightly rearward to align with the first header bolt. The brace is attached to the header bolt/stud with a nut.

You first install and tighten the header bolt/stud, then slide the brace onto the stud and secure it with a nut, which I believe is 3/8th coarse thread.

Nice shot.

The 86 uses a different compressor and the brace is located in a slightly different location too. I'm guessing that the 85's is the same as the 86, but in any case, there should be a brace. Of course, the way GM constantly changes things, one never knows.

Wish I had a photo to post because they really help. Trying to describe things in words, at times, doesn't cut it.

Good point- I forgot to point out that mine's a shot of my 89. Your bracket may vary.

Jake is right on in his description. The '85 is identical to the '86. The photos give you a good idea as to the way it is mounted to the manifold, except as Jake mentioned you should use the very first bolt hole for the stud and nut.
