Default Code 64 and a bad day (sorry, kinda long)

To make a long story shorter. I was heading out to the Autocross this morning and when I stopped for coffee, I could smell antifreeze and steam was coming from the front passenger side of the hood. The small hose to the throttle body had sprung a small streaming leak, thankfully missing the opti!. I headed back home and by-passed the throttle body (I was planning to do this anyway, just not today!)

Well on my way home from the Solo (75 miles from my house) the Vette started running real rough and the SES light came on, went off, came on.

Here's what it was doing, btw, she's a 95 auto.

At highway speed it felt like it was lagging or dropping cylinders. It ran much better when the SES light was on but when it cycled off it got rough again. While the SES light was on the instant mileage was around 23 mpg but when it went off, it would drop to 12 to 14 mpg.

The codes were 32 EGR and code 64 bank 2 (right front) heated oxygen sensor (lean exhaust indicated)

According to the manuel, this code will set the SES light and the system will go into open loop.

This sounds plausible, has anyone had these same symptoms? Could a faulty O2 sensor manifest itself this way?

Thanks for any help.

See you on course.

Yes a bad O2 sensor can do just what you described. Clear the codes and see if the problem returns.

Thanks for the reply. The more I think about it, the more it makes sense. I'm going to follow the test procedures in the manuel tonight. Now I just have to figure out how to physically get to to sensors

See you on course.

Sounds like a bad 02 sensor. When mine went bad it ran rough and had horible gas milage. Easy fix and not to bad on the wallet.

Another data point, I had a few minutes last night and pulled the o2 sensors. Driver's side looked normal but the passenger side (code 64) was totally blackend and covered with carbon. Even the slits were totally included. I'll replace both of them and R&R the EGR before I button it back up.
