I'm wanting to purchase the security overide system for the VATS. The problem is that I have to know the measurment of resistance from my key in order to purchase the correct setup. Is there a way that I can check the resistance myself or do I need to take it in?
Use your multimeter, using ohms put one lead on one side of the vats inplant and other lead on the other side. Take the reading to this guys key sale on Ebay he has a chart that tell you what value you have. In fact his writeup on it is outstanding: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...category=40016
HAVE A GREAT DAY!!!!!!!!!

Most GM OR CHEVY and even BUICK dealers and MOST locksmiths have a little box they put your key in to find it's resistance. You dont have to take car in..just key..most will tell you for free.
WOW THATS CRAZY! He asks a question at 6:36..THEN 2 PEOPLE from TEXAS answer him at exactly 8:32 .. ..freaky!
Don't buy that stupid kit. You'll waste your money. Just measure the resistance of your key and go to radioshack and buy a quarter watt resistor that is close to your key value. There is a plug near the steering column under the dash with two yellow wires. Just put the resister in the plug that goes to the ECM and tape it in place. If your car will start, your set.
The woman I bought my 87 vette from came out of work to her 90 vette and found the driver window busted , the column busted out, but her vette hadn't moved an inch. If she had defeated her VATS, her car would not have been there! She didn't work in a, "bad", neighborhood either!
:iagree: ONLY use a VATS disable in a pinch or for diagnoses..this is a pretty good system..unless it fails you really should leave it alone..it may save your car one day. :yesnod:
I would say the same thing but mine decided to not start a few times the other day and I was temped to rip it out and shoot it with the 12gauge. But I decided to just figure in the "wait" into my day and it really hasn't done it since.
Last year when I bought my 86 I sometimes had trouble getting it started...the GM dealer parts guy sayed that often the key gets worn and there is not godd contact...I bought a new key from him and have had absolutely no problems since...works for me... :seeya
