What do the heads flow? Would be really hard to suggest something without knowing that.

My suggestion is to go have them flowed... then pick the cam based on the results of that. Otherwise, it's just a shot in the dark imho.

Are you looking for 400 at the crank or the rear wheels?

at the crank with a stock style intake it's pretty hard to get much more than that it will prob have over 500 ftlb. the engine will be at 10.5 to 1 comp . How much does it cost to have heads flow tested?

There isn't too many cams to choose from...
I'd recommend Crane Powermax 222/230 at .050 hyd.roller cam.
That was what I had in my 421 with dart II heads and T-Ram intake.

It was relatively mild with good idle and powerband up to 5500rpm.

...I guess the 219 LPE would not be a bad choise either...

The cost of flowing the heads depends on how many ports you want flowed.

If you want just one intake and one exhaust, it cost me about $25.00 the last time I had it done.

If the car is to be street driven, I recommend choosing a camshaft with aggressive ramps to give more area under the curve. Something from CompCams Xtreme Energy Series or a comparable one from Crane, etc.

Keep .050 duration in the low to mid 220s; something like the one already recommended.

224/230 @ .050 is a great duration figure to run in a street driven car. I'm NOT saying that because that's what I'm running in my 415. It's simply that when you go much higher in .050 duration, vacuum falls off which effects how well the powe brakes work. Idle quality suffers also and the power range moves higher in the band; perhaps higher than you'd like it to be.

How raunchy an idle can you live with? How much low end are you willing to trade off for power up top? These are individual decisions that differ from person to person.

Hope this helps.

And remember...
You are still using the tpi configuration even with larger base and runners so
your upper rpm limit will most certainly be below 5500rpm.

No point choosing a more radical cam with power range above that...the intake just doesn't support it.

I did run a 230/238 cam with T-ram & AFR 210 heads but the intake wouldn't make power over 5500 even if the heads & cam would have allowed it.
