Default Headlight Prob

Last night I heard a knock-knock-knock coming from the hood after I pulled into the garage. I figured it must be the horn problem I was having before coming back. I opened the hood and it wasn't the horn, but the passenger headhlight motor knocking and the the cap on the end turning 1/4 turn each time.

I turned on the headlights and they rotated open fine, but when I went to turn it off, they started really slow and the knocking sound was back. So I left them open and disconnected the wires to each. Right now I'm running with the lights rotated open and would like to know exactly what the cause is before I go off ordering $5,000 worth of parts just to find out it's only something minor. I know the previous versions had problems with gears. So...what could it be my C4 Friends? :conehead

There's another headlight problem post that you should take a look at. It's on the first page of this board. http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zerothread?id=829001

Also, the 'TOOLS' "Tech Tips" section on this Forum has lots of info that can probably point you in the right direction.

You have three delrin bushings inside the headlight motor gearbox that have become powder. Fairly cheap from Eckler's but your in for about 2 hours of work for each headlight. Might as well do both while your at it. The second one will be easier than the first. There is a lot of info on how to change the bushings. After having done several of these my first advise is to use a scribe to mark the mounting points of the head light assembly before removing it to the bench. Makes realignment a snap.

Try to move the headlights with the manual *****; if control feels "mushy" replace those three nylon bushings.

:iagree:
Definitely a bushing problem! Both of my lights did the same thing. I upgraded my plastic gear to the brass gear. It is a pain sometimes to get the plastic gear out without damaging it to get the bushings in. You may want to look at getting at least an extra plastic gear ($25 at Ecklers) just in case you have to dig into one of the gears to pry it out.
