I've been following some threads about converting our tailights to LED. Some of the web sites I found that offer conversions seem very expensive. Yet others that have pics posted don't really appeal to me.
So, I was with a friend ealier this week when we stopped by a Fleetpride shop for 18 wheelers for a part for his truck. In the showroom was a whole bin full of 4" round LED lights for $18.95 ea. They have more bulbs/leds than I have seen available in the conversion kits for our cars. They are the tail/stop light combination and the pigtails are like $2-3. Now our tailights, 84-90, are six inches. But I'm thinking that with a spare lens and a dremel and glue there's a lot of possibility there. All four lenses and pigtials would be less than $100.00.
You are willing to spend short of $100 so your taillights are LED's instead of incandescent lamps? Why?
I am about to install some LED's in my 87's middle stoplight but only because the quartz lamps are so expensive.
If you have to have LED's, you can make your own conversion by using the base out of a stoplamp and buying superbright LED's.
Ok. Bust a stoplamp and use 470 ohm resistors in series with each LED and use a number of bright LED's and connect them in parallel across the base of the stoplamp socket and plug em in. Get the LED's at http://www.hosfelt.com
They have some 9000 mcd (millicandela) red LED's cheap.
A friend of mine put LED replacement bulbs in his TrailBlazer an they work great and they require NO modifications, they just plug in. I just ordered replacements for most of my lights. The link is http://www.superbrightleds.com/led_products.htm
