Default HVAC Programmer Problems

Using posts in the archives I mangaged to pull out the HVAC control head out of the dash and clean the contacts at the wiring harness -- which solved the problem of the button lights not illuminating and the manual fan control now wokrs -- but...

There is still not any change of where the air comes out (only the defroster and bit out of the floor; but no vents) So how in the world do you disconnect the vacuum lines from the HVAC programmer ??? More over anyone have any experience in diagnosing on of these things?

This thing is a pain to get to and get out. I think it is the second component they mount on the frame at Bowling Green...

Just pulled mine yesterday. Had the exact problem....air only coming from the defroster and a small amount on the floor. I pulled that retaining washer off the vacuum connectors and pulled the box. First thing I checked for was vacuum at the black hose in the vacuu line bundle. Was fine so I knew everything was ok on the engine side. I then ran a piece of fish tank air pump tubeing from the manifold to the inside of the car, about 10 feet(vacuum) to each of the hoses at the bundle. Each line worked and caused the correct door to operate.

Here is where it got ugly. Cleaned the box and used a small allen wrench to check for any binds in the hoses where the enter the box. Tried to get the vacuum lines to reattach to the box using a bolt instead of the retaing nut, and could not. The lines would not attach correctly. Finally after an afternoon just spliced the black to the tan, bypassing the box and giving me front vents all the time. Finally after 2 years have front air. Disappointed I could not get it to work but will tackle it another time.

my 2 cents.....

With all the hoses attached to the programmer - how did you remove the retaining washer off of the connector hub? Is it a speed nut that I can back out with a screwdriver? Hard to see what it looks like under the dash - and with all the hoses in the way...

I pulled it of w/ needlenose pliers. It was a bear. I removed the carpet piece and then the metal plate for a little more access.
