I'd probably say if you use the oil pressure method to determine if your low on oil your peforming a rebuild shortly after, checking the dipstick just might be a little easier.
If it's low enough to show up on the gauge, the pump will b e intermittently sucking air and oil because the pickup is being uncovered. when it sucks air, the pressure will drop and your bearings (among other things) are being starved.
