what happens if I were to the TB bypass deal and also close off the coolant line at back of block next to distributor?
(well i can't delete this...) oh i just figured it out the coolant circulates throught the block then heads then intake manifold and out the coolant hose on the front of the block, right?
which would make the back coolant line an air bubble burpping line... sorry guys for stupid posts im just getting tired
Re: coolant lines on intake manifold.... (mistaben)
Coolant does NOT need to circulate to the back of the intake manifold. Most mainfolds (re: L-98 for example) just block off the head openings on both sides at the back. Coolant flow (old style small block) is from front to back along the cylinders, then back to front through the head (with openings between the two through the head gastet, obviously) on each side of the motor, with the crossover at the front top of the heads. The water pump pushes water in at the front of the block. New type small block (LT-1 and newer) reverses that pattern - water in at the front of the heads, out at the front of the block. This cools the heads First thereby lowering the combustion chamber temps a bit and allowing better control of detonation and a bit more compression/timing. Either way - no coolant crossover at the back of the heads is needed, or even desirable.
Re: coolant lines on intake manifold.... (mistaben)
The intake base gaskets for an '88 L98 have the rear coolan passages blocked off with small steam vent holes in the center of the blocking metal. In addition there is a steam vent in the top rear of the intake base that feeds into a heater hose. Do NOT block off or remove this steam vent hose.
Re: coolant lines on intake manifold.... (mistaben)
I removed the rear water line and blocked it off with no ill effects.Water temps hasnt changed or anything. No leaks or any problems.Dont see a hazard if you do it or not.The heater core pipe to rear intake pipe union,I blocked it off with a screw, hose and clamp with sealer inside and its never leaked or come off.Dont know why people knock the removal of this line if you dont want it there. Most aftermarket TPI style intakes dont even have the provision for it anyway should you upgrade.
Re: coolant lines on intake manifold.... (Bill's86Coupe)
The First gen L-98 (my '85 for example) Completely block off the rear coolant passages in the head. No vents or anything. They aren't necessary on a small block. If memory serves correctly, most intake gasket sets Used (pre-TPIS days) to come with interchangeable metal plates that you used over the rear openings in the heads, either solid ones or ones with small holes (vents), you used whichever ones you wanted.
