Default Handling problems on the highway

My 88 with 11x17 tires wanders a lot on the highway. I travel highways where there is a lot of truck traffic and the roads are worn into tracks. The car just takes off in one direction. Is anyone finding this behaviour as well? Could it be wheel allignment or possibly worn shocks?

Wide tires like you have do tend to follow grooves in the road. A good alignment and re-setting your toe to 0* should help a bit. Check my website for VB&Ps recommended alignment settings for your c4

When's the last time you had a 4 wheel alignment?

never had one. I just watch the tire wear and go from there. It doesn't pull, which is indicative of poor alignement, just jumps back and forth. Ball joints and tie rod ends seem fine.

Yup, ruts suck. Mine does it also. If the roads are as bad as you say an alignment won't help any. Unless it's out of alignment already. Sorry I can't help more.

I agree, have your alignment checked. A little front toe-in can help with this; see VB&P specs.
