Default transmission tunnel differences

I know that the tunnels for the automatics and the manuals are different (and that changing from one transmission to the other is extremely difficult). Is the location of the shifter hole the only difference, or are the tunnels shaped differently too? Why didn't the engineers create one tunnel that could accommodate different panels of some sort that could be used for an automatic or a manual?

I know my 4+3 tunnel has a large divot or knotch for the shifter mechanism. I have heard that automatics dont have this, but I have not seen any pics of one of those.

My 4+3 had a big notch on the side of the tunnel for the shifter mechanism. The automatics have a smaller notch more towards the top of the tunnel for the shifter. I think the 6 speed has only a big square hole on the top of the tunnel where the top loader shifter comes through.

Simple, they dont want you messing with it. Youll never hear me accuse GM engineers of being particularly smart about anything.
Besides, its not something people gripe about when they buy a new Corvette. Small changes are to be expected.

Thanks everyone. Vader: point taken. I assume from all the replies that the only difference is the location and shape of the hole for the shifter. Are the overall shapes of the tunnels the same? I would expect that they would have to be because producing two differently shaped tunnels would have been too expensive.

I'v done a changover on a 96 6 spd theft recovery.I had a 94 rollover automatic parts car (I don't know how but they did it) I cut a hole in the floor leaving room to overlap and glued in the floor of the automatic with SMC fiberglass adhisive.I had to chang the intire wiring harness too(door latch to door latch all one piece). And the center console.the rear diff. is a little different too,the standard has u bolts as the auto has straps and bolts. The gear ratio is different to.the tourque shaft hole are in different locations also .I just drilled new holes.Basicly it's alot of work

AZ Z51,

What a task. It's no surpise that few people are willing to substitute one type of transmission for another.

Another member mentioned he made a fiberglass part for the manual shifter. I don't remember who it was but he mentioned possibly making them if there was an interest in them.
