Here is something I learned while putting the ZF in my 84- (of course make sure the shift ball is off) and put some electrical tape around the entire shift arm...when it comes time to jockey the ZF in (and getting the shifter thru the cut in the tranny tunnel- it can get scratched like hell! I found this out the hard way- fortunately the leather boot comes all the way up to my existing (stock) shift ****- so you don't see the scuffs...plus- you can somewhat keep the **** threads in decent shape as well by protecting them...
I tell you- just getting everything lined up- input shaft in, and shifter thru the hole was quite an adventure lying on your back! :-)
Am I the only person who likes the factory shift ****?
i liked the factory **** too, until I felt the Hurst ball ****, just out of the package. Being a "solid" and heavier shifter ****, I'm expecting more feedback from the tranny, which is a good thing (just my opinion at this point).
The B&M shifter is so short and solid to begin with that a solid shifter **** would probably break your hand. I just don't like the idea of putting cheap looking plastic where a nice leather shifter used to be.
Not to mention what happens the first time your hands are sweaty from those hot days at the track.
To each their own though. If anybody has a stock shifter **** in good shape who's willing to sell it I know somebody who is interested in buying if the price is right.

I always wear multi-layer Nomex gloves when I do DE's, and the stock shift **** give a much more positive grip on the shifter. I get subtle but reassuring feedback on the position of my hand and the gear that I'm in. Not a big deal if you're blasting down the 1/4, but when you're rowing through the gears 16-20 times per lap, it makes a difference.
I have commented on The Forum before about the virtues of the ZF Doc's modified stock shifter. With all due respect to those that have the B&M unit...having driven a Ripper equiped car, all I can say to those that have it is: why? The Hurst is similar to the Doc's, but only as precise as the components that remain in the original shifter frame. The modified ZF Doc's shifter is pure silk precision. There's no need to muscle a super short lever that feels like it's wedged between planes of tight fitting, non-lubricated steel. I know one guy that went as far as adding a tall MOMO **** on his Ripper to get enough leverage so he didn't have to yank on it in normal, everyday driving. (this guy owns a Corvette shop, BTW) I could see were maintaining the stock **** on especially a Ripper, would be of value.
In all seriousness, I have two great condition factory ***** still, one from the 85 and one from the 92, I can always switch if I grow to not like the Hurst.
first of all, am i the only one whos ripper rattles? second, it's not the shims either. they're all snug. seems to be somewhere else. third, i love the stock ****, but saw a flamball and loved it. another plus for it is that it actually raised the height of the shifter handle about 1/2 inch. which inproved leverage. i just like the way the ball fits in my hand and love the way it lights at night. having said that, i have a stock **** i'll sell if the price is right. throw me a number and i may bite. but can someone please PLEASE help me get rid of this ripper rattle. my car is so tight and i hate to have a single rattle in it. thanks fellas.
Thinking about installing the hurst bilet shifter 391-5084. Saw in this thread that some found the shifter ***** on e-bay. Didn't find them there and wondered if anyone had the hurst part number for the six speed ****. Also, since the new shifter is threaded to accept the stock corvette ****, does the new hurst **** use the same thread pattern?

It uses all the same parts. You do not have to get the hurst ****.
