Guys,
Looking for opinions please.
I bought my 84XFIRE with 70K miles on it.
I have no idea if the fuel pump has been changed, it may be 20 years old ?
I have been travelling a lot (2 - 3+ hour trips), I bought it to travel with it
and have changed everything but the fuel pump.
Should I just spend the $165.00 and change it to be sure that I won't get stuck anywhere or are these pumps not prone to failure ???
Thx,
Andy J.

Andy, stock replacement @ autozone . Ac-Delco =$53 with strainer. You can change it in 20 minutes with minimal tools. Trust me , dont spend more.... Pete

The '84 pump is no more troublesome than any others. You can test it to see if it is performing up to snuff, but if it's not giving problems, it's likely, OK. One of the biggest problems with in-tank, electric fuel pumps ocures when you regularly run the tank low on fuel. The gasoline is a coolant for the pump. If you're worried, you can buy a spare and carry it with you or replace it, if it will make you more comfortable. Replacing the pump is one of the easiest DYI jobs on a C4. IF you replace it go with an '85 up pump. And pay about half what you have stated.

Guys,
Isn't the 85 pump too much pressure for my low pressure Crossfire ?
I thought the newer pump for the Tuned port was a lot more pressure ?????
Just Checking........
thx,
Andy

Then stick with the '84 pump. It isn't the pump that makes the pressure. It is the restriction of the regulator that regulates the pressure. Kind of funny how they named that thing, HUH?
Re: 84 Electric Fuel Pump - Should I replace it ?? (andyjsmith)
I run the newer pump in mine with no problem thats what the regulator is all about oit returns the excess back to the tank. If you supply 30psi and the car only needs 13psi it bleeds off the rest to the tank. The newer pump advantage is you have a cushion of pressure above whats required.
Re: 84 Electric Fuel Pump - Should I replace it ?? (andyjsmith)
Ye s you just get the pump. You need to buy a new pick-up sock (screen). There is some mods needed for the connector to upgrade to a 85 too. With no other mods on the car an 85 pump wont have any effect really. BTW you should check your fuel filter on the 84 they are very importantto keep clean and it feels like a bad pump when they get dirty. It happened to me with a filter with only like 400 miles on it.
