thats normal for a stock intake and cam...nitrous won't improve the top end rpm or power......well maybe the power alittle........you'll hit a wall at 5400 rpm and max power will be at 4500.......even with a blower...I'm running 32 degrees timing
Without having looked at the timing after I picked up the car with nitrous installed, it's at 4 degrees......seems rather low, however, I believe it's stock timing...
Shall I up the timing for more bottom end? The knock sensor should take over if it pings.......no??
Oh.your looking for base timing...my bad...6 degrees is the stock setting and some run 8 degrees advance..............with the 75 hp nitrous shot I'd set it at 6 degrees
Okay....Great. Will check it.....
Thanks.
Called Zex and he said to leave it at whatever stock timing is supposed to be set at. (didn't know what it was supposed to be).
Will check when I get home..... the difference between 4 and 6 degrees should be significant!
Generally, anywhere under 100hp Nitrous kit is stock timing, with 100-150 being 2Âş retarded, 151-200 being 4Âş retarded.
OH!!!! also make sure you are running your stock chip! aftermarket chips add timeing and lean out AIR/FUEL! so if you have a custom chip pull it and run the stock one!
Dyno numbers on the straight motor was 203 horse (263 at the flywheel) , and 278 at the rear wheels on the spray. Without having it at the track at all, with a 3300 pound car, laying down that kind of horsepower, it should run 12.60 @ 104....
22-24% loss through the tranny..... (203 horse was surprising)
If funds allow ($115 or so) you can hook up an msd start/retard box. This is wired to the main arming switch on my car. When you turn nos on it will pull back a set (by plug in chips) amount of degrees of timing. This allows desired timing n/a and perfered timing for nos. Rule of thumb is 2 degrees per fifty hp shot. Remember nos speeds the burn cycle making timing advance much less important. When in doubt error on the side of caution. Pulling a couple degrees more will affect et little. Also if you are **** like me you can , although not nessary, step down 1 on the spark plug heat range. I run an ac 41-629 plug. This replaces the old fr3-LS. I believe this is slightly cooler than your fr5-LS factory plug.I have been running my system this way for ten or so years with zero problems. Sorry for the long winded $.02, I don't want you to have problems. Enjoy!
i have a zex 125 shot in my l98. i run base timing at 8 and pull out 6 deg on the spray. im probably am being a little conservative pulling out 6 degrees but better safe then sorry.
as soon as go to the track i should be graduating to the 11 second club(if i get her hooked up).
Okay....... since I am an ex-Ford guy, can someone be kind enough to guide me through on setting my timing for my ZEX kit? Gonna try the 6 degree setting.....
if your base timing is at 6 degrees and your running 125 shot. then 4 degrees is fine. the only reason i take 6 degrees out is i have my base timing at 8 degrees. 6 degrees for you is only gonna be safer, it will hurt performance some. basicly i am running mine at 4 degrees because i have base timing is advanced 2 degrees.
I run a 150 shot.
Stock base timing,
1 step colder on the plugs,
Jet stage I chip,
and I pull 6*-8* while on the spray.
There is a lot of other factors to figure when pulling timing on the spray. The 2* per 50hp is a good rule. But dont forget engine temp, humidity, air temp, etc.. They all play a roll in tuning.
Okay. If I hook up my timing light and read it, it's probably at 4.... I can advance it to 6.... Then, HOW to I "pull back" timing if I up the nitrous to say 100-125 shot?
