Ok, I'm changing my oil tomorrow and switching to Mobil 1. I got the oil today and found they did not have the Mobil 1 filter for my Vette. I checked with the counter folks and they said I could use the
Mobil M1-111 filter instead. This is a really SHORT filter when compared to the stock type filter. I checked at another store and bought a K&N filter number HP-2002 and it sure looks like the stock size I'd expect on a small block Chevy.
Ok, question. I have both filters. Should I use the Mobil 1 really short filter or go with the K&N that appears to be more of the stock size? Both seem to filter at about the same level (10-20 microns) so I would think it would not matter much as far as their filtering ability.
Guess I'm into the "bigger is better" thing here! Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
Brad
Dont use the Mobil 1 if it is too small. It does not have as much filtering area as the bigger one and could clog up faster. Also some small filters can slow down the flow of your oil.
Thanks guys! I REALLY appreciate the advice. I just can't see how this tiny filter (looks like it has been run over by a truck!) could ever flow enough oil to satisfy the engine's needs. It's kind of scary looking at it. I've used the Mobil 1 filters on my V6 daily driver and it's been great.
Evidently AutoZone (only one who carries Mobil 1 filters in our area) has stopped carrying the full sized Mobil 1 filters and have instead gone to this shortie style. The short style was actually in the bin that used to hold the original large size filter. I think I recalled a thread where some stores are not carrying the large PF25 filter for Chevy V8's anymore. Sounds like a conspiracy.
Again Thanks!
Brad

Is K & N oil filter, synthetic or paper?, their website
is not clear on that issue.

AMSOIL's SDF filters are rated very highly in independent lab tests as well as the unofficial oil study link that has been posted on this site several times. AMSOIL SDF Filters contain a combination of cellulose, synthetic and glass blend media to provide longer life and improved efficiency. I'm not sure about the K&N.
He didn't ask about AMSOIL filters.......if I see the word AMSOIL if nobody has asked about it I'm going to scream!!!!! lol
I realize you're trying to spread the word on your product but only tell about it if someone is asking about it don't steal threads about mobil 1 oil and k&n filters etcetc
I would go with a K&N filter. I use HP 3002 k&N filter. It is a longer filter and has more filtering surface. It fits perfectly. I use it on my 1986 and 1976 and my 1971 chevy pickup. K&N filters still use springs behind the inlet while others use a piece of flexible metal. Add a magnet to the exterior of the filter for extra metal sweeping.

How much longer is that than the 2002? I use the 2002 on my '87 and it is very long with that added nut fitting on the bottom of it. Anything longer and I'd run the risk of the filter being the lowest part of my car which would be unacceptable.
