On my way to work last night I noticed that my tach was on zero. Every now and then it would jump back up and then go back down to zero. It was raining pretty hard all day but I have never had this problem in the rain before. When I got to work and parked it was fine.
This morning I started the car and the tach was ok but when I turned on to the on ramp it started to jump around again. The first few times I used my wipers it went back down to zero and then it was fine. Once I got home and parked it was ok.
After doing a search it seems that the two main reasons for this are water in the main bulkhead connector or a defective tach filter.
Can some one tell me exactly where the tach filter is located?
I'll try to dry out the connector and filter first and if not i'll just replace the tach filter.
On 85-89 the tach filter is bolted to the top left transmission bell housing. But because it started acting up after rain, I suspect water in the bulk head connection-located by the battery. The bottom row of pins include the tach. Simply unbolt the connection and look for whitish or greenish color, if it's present simply blow it out-leave the black anti corrosive grease in there reconnect and seal the top and sides of the connector.
