Default opti-replacement?

I'm changing an otpi in a 95. Does it matter what position the cam pin is in? or what cylinder is a TDC? because the engine a accidentally spun after the opti was removed.

No it don't because the cam pin can only index into a specific matching hole in the opti. But it is a little easier if you rotate the cam so that the pin is at about 3 o' clock position. Then you can line up the opti pin to the mark indicated on the back of the opti. This will make alignment and indexing a little easier. Plus lube the new O rings well on the Opti, when it pops into place it will sit flat onto its mounting points. Minimal force is needed to do this. So if its off its mounting pads the unit isn't indexed correctly so by all means do not force it

I have to do this job soon myself, I was looking at the new opti and I can see the holes are keyed, but my question is, doe it require a gasket where it bolts to the timing cover? just seems like youd wanna prevent stuff from getting in there by the cam, and there was no gaskets provided with the opti.

Thanks,
John

it will not require any gaskets unless you remove the timing cover, however you may want to replace the round oil seal especially if it appears to have been leaking.

While you are at it, now would be a good time to replace the water pump, wires and plugs. But you probably already know that.
