Default Anyone have Random Tech. Cats?

I'm thinking of getting these as my next mod for my LT4, but I'm wondering if anyone has 1st-hand experience with them? Dyno proven results would be nice, but SOTP reactions are fine too! Thanks in advance.

Also - what's the best place to buy these things?

My '88 now runs a single RT main cat from TPIS for $225.

I went with RT because they have a know rep. for producing one of the highest flowing cats on the market.

That's what I was thinking... I believe I'll need 2 cats for the LT4, so I imagine the price will be higher, but I wanna do everything I can for more power here in CA while still being smog legal.

Yes. Infact, L98s had THREE cats... two precats (or pup cats), one on each bank, and one main cat.

The LT4, like the LT1, has just two cats, one on each bank.

I am interested in new cats, too. Not right now, but down the road.

Default Factory Flow

The factory LT4 cats flow pretty well. I don't think you will see much of a horsepower increase with Random tech cats. Especially on a near stock engine.

Can I assume the cats on the 96 LT1 are the same as those on the LT4? Also, what would you estimate those minimal gains of the RT cats over stock LT4's to be? TIA...

There was test done by someone on the ls1 forum (I use to have the link but not anymore) that tested cats. The RT were did not flow as good as Carsound and few others. The RT metal metrax (sp?) did flow alot better, but were by far more expensive. From eveything I have ever read on them, the regular RT cats are not worth the money unless you absolutely need them because of spacing issues.

The RT Metallic substrate cats will far outflow the Car Sound ceramic cats. Also they are the most expensive of the RT line up. But thanks to supply and demand there is an alternative to the RT cats now. Go to:

www.dynatechheaders.com

And check out their MetalCat line up. They now offer a 3" metallic cat that flows the same and has the same core as the RT cats. And don't let them tell you any different because there are only a couple companies making the substrates and both of them are in Europe These cats can be had from JEGS for less than $150 which is a far cry from what RT gets for them!

You will need two, and being in California I'm not sure if you have many options other than the direct-replacements cats. The bullet cats are a bit cheaper, the direct-replcacemnet cats are meant to work with your stock exhaust manifolds. MORE Performance has them, but they are about $600 for the pair...kinda pricey for probably a negligable gain in power.

Yeah, he might have problems with shops not wanting to touch anything but OEM replacements. It was impossible for me to even get a shop to agree to put on CARB approved cats when I had to replace mine this year. I got a hold of some OEM ones and the shop that did the work wanted cash and no record of the work that could come back to them. I think it's just that you can't put any cat on as long as it's as clean as OEM.

I have the cats because one my stock cats became blocked somehow. The are a nice piece but I don't think you will get any power on a stock engine. Also, it does come with a cali green emisions card. I have not looked at mine since I bought them not being from there. I'm sure Rt could fill you in on that.

Are there any fitment issues? The whole dynatech site is dedicated to LS1 cars. Will these swap into an LT1 car?

Unless there's something wrong with your stock cats (which I doubt), save your money. The stock LT1/4 cats are the same basic unit as on the ZR1s, they're freaking huge. There's no HP changing them out, unless of course, you're going with long tube headers.

There may be some HP from swapping out the stock cat on an L98, but not on an LT1/4.

Are all the Dynatech cats the metallic kind? They -compare- to ceramic, but don't indicate what they are.
