86 4+3 shifter throw length

86 4+3 shifter throw length
Today I drove a late 86 and it was interesting to compare it to my early 86. What struck me the most was the shifter throw length. On my car the shifter is very tight, with a very short throw length and narrow neutral, while on the late 86 the throw was much longer. Was a change made or does mine have another type of shifter?

I hear ya
All I know is that mine is a late 86' and its sloppy as well as very long thowing. But I have been told that some of that is due to the shift gate needing replacement. It sounded expensive so I've put it off for now. I've also seen a short shift kit in some performance catalogs but I'm not sure if they work well.
