I am buying the Zeitronix WB, and I want to make universal type mount for the sensor. I will probably put bungs in two of my cars, but I want it to be portable- so I can try it on all my friends rides too.
I am thinking about putting a bung in a piece of 1 1/2 diameter pipe right in the middle of a 16" length. Then making a clamp to hold it into the end of a tailpipe. It would then be about 8"in and 8" out of the tailpipe. Do you think that would be far enoughor long enough to minimize contamination of the readings by the atmospheric air? Has anyone built anything similiar, or have any advice otherwise? Thanks
Sort of a dumb question but why not just have an exhaust shop weld another bung into your exhaust system near the convertor or collector. That is the best place for a accurate and representative sample anyway. It is easily capped off when not in use.
Bob, thats like what im looking for. Something useable on many cars.
TJ, My cars will have bungs. I just dont want to spring for bungs and do the labor on my friends cars. It would be easier to fab up a piece of pipe, something universal.
I agree it's better to mount in more permanently. But I made mine up this way to take in and out and use on other peoples cars quickly. I guess the pipe is about 14" or so. I used a section of pipe that just fits into my exhaust and then a reducer collar slipped over the end and welded around it. I drilled the holes and welded nuts for the set screws to screw into. I made those "wing" nuts by welding a couple of bolts together. It was easier than going to the hardware store to try to find some wing bolts.
I made a similar pipe on Sat. On end slips over 2.5" tailpipes (for my brother's Camaro) and the other end slips over 2.75" tailpipes (for my car). I used some clamps to hold it in place and welded the bung smack in the middle.
This allowed me to tune both my car and my brothers on Sunday at the track, with never having to crawl under the car. It also got a few thumbs up from fellow racers!
