Default Tire Recommendations?

Hello All,

I've done a search and only came up with 8 results. I have a 1993 with the base suspension and I'll need to replace my tires soon. My car is a daily driver (~80% street/highway and ~20% 'spirited' back road driving) so treadwear is the most important criteria for me.

None of the search results talked about treadwear, but the car currently has BF Goodrich tires on it. I'd like to find a set that will give me at least 40,000 miles since 20,000 mile tires will have me replacing tires about once a year. I don't need Z rated (I'll even go down to H rated since I would very rarely get into triple digits).

I've looked at tirerack.com but all of their tires for my car are high performance tires and I didn't see any treadwear information for them.

Any info would be greatly appreciated...

Hmm... all tires on Tirerack have wear and traction ratings. Are you sure you looked everywhere on the stie?

Right now I run Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 tires on my vette and BF Goodrich Traction T/A H on my GTP. The GS-D3s are an exceptional street tire, but I haven't had them long enough to tell you how many miles you can get out of them. The Traction T/A I mentioned is a great all season tire that performs very well in the H & V series (not the T they offer also).

Default mechanic recommends Cooper Cobra GTZ

My mechanic, who also races and autocrosses, really endorses the Cooper Cobra GTZ tires for all around performance. Not sure of the miles we can get. I just got my '92 and the previous owner put Nittos on it, which still have a lot of tread left. So, when the time comes I probably will go with the Coopers.

That's my .02 cents worth.

scorp508...

You are correct, there is treadlife information on tirerack's site. I was too impatient and didn't realize I could click on the picture of the tires in the result list to get detailed specs on them.

i have the coopers on my car and i have had problems tring to get them balanced. had them done twice by goodyear and cant seem to get all the vibration out. but besides that they seem ok. i had the goodyear gatorbacks on before and never had a problem with balance. but i did notice the coopers hook up much better.i dont think i would go with them again.

I have Bridgestone Potenza's and love them. The previous owner had Dunlops on my car and I ran them for awhile, but there was noticible road noise. I like the Potenza's better. My experience with Goodyears, not on Vetttes but other passenger cars, is major road noise......

I've had Firestone Firehawks on two of my C4s and I was/am pleased with the treadwear and handling, wet and dry. I had put about 25,000 on my 87 when I sold it and the tires still looked very good. I'm ultra fussy about tires on my cars, but I'm sure there are good things to say about other brands; I just go with what gives me good service and peace of mind. Tread depth on some "cheaper" tires is half or less than the Firehawks. Having said that, I'm sure that a lot of folks don't feel they have to plunk down nearly a grand for new skins (including balancing and alignment). I faithfully have my wheels aligned and balanced every 5,000 miles and I believe that is one of the reasons I get exceedingly good tread life on both my cars (the wife's big old fat Lincoln being the other). And I am definitely not into burnouts!

Default Tire Recommendations

I have a set of Falkens on my '88'. I did a little research and comparision and came up with these. Price, performance, and warranty were my considerations. The Falken tires came in a lower price and had the best warranty for Z rated tires, I know you said you weren't interested in this, but thought I would throw this out. I have had them for about 6 - 8 months and am very happy with them.

My '88 came with original GY Eagles on it, over 4yrs ago; now, with a little over 40k miles more on the clock (with more than a few put on 1/4 mile at a time ) she's about ready for another set.

Why settle for a second rate tire. You have a vette and its a performance car, im not even sure if a tire shop will install a lower speed rated tire on your car because it wasent originally equiped with one. I think there are so liability issues there but I could be wrong. At the least I would get a BFG KDW. Had them on my old car and put about 10k on them and they still looked new, and I did about the same ratio of highway to city driving that you will. Plus when it came down to the "fun time" with the car I wasent stuck w/ a pos tire on there. Kumho's 712 is also a decent tire if you just want to put something on there that will perform and last. Having a cheap tire on a car like a vette is a sin. Just my .02.

C-YA,
I've had the Falkens on for 20k miles now and Im only half way worn.

They are great in the rain, cornering is great, and high speed handling is pretty good. They also have a rim protector that has saved my rim a few times :leaving
I've been real happy with them.
