Default differential question

I've been reading threads on differential problems and I was wondering if anybody knows what rear I have in my '85 L98 w/Z51. Is it a D36,D44?? Mine is whining a bit and if I'm facing a swap I will probably want to go with the strongest available.

it all depends on the transmission. If you have an auto, it's a D36. All manuals (except 1984), have the D44.

Get a D44 regardless.

Yeah, it's an auto. I didn't figure I'd be lucky enough to have the D44. Thanks guys.

The D36 weakness MAY be a myth. I have 2 friends running over 450 RWHP through theirs with no problems.

If I was putting that much power down, I would cryo the rear and never think about it again.

I think the D36 has gotten a bad rap on this forum. I agree, it's weaker than the 44, but it's not an eggshell.

I hope so cause with the kind of mods that my vette has, with a cut lid and air foil, I have had many sleepless nights worrying about blowing out my D36.

my D36 is still alive , this year so far it's 325 RWHP and i still have the 250 shot on tap. The 3.07 gear is what i think makes them live. Hopefully later this year i'll be getting the D44, i just don't think the 36 will take the 200 shot right out the box with slicks.

Flyerfan...what gear does your friend have in his 36 ?

Same here, I'm so scared of mine breaking from reading about them on here, I want to buy a D44 before I do anything else.

Who sells a complete D44 with your choice of ring gears.....I'm needing something a little numerically higher.
