Need tips for painting
I have 2 spots on my car I want to fix. One is a 1 inch by 12 inch strip around the gas cap, that is "orange peel" where the clearcoat is peeling away. The other spot is a large chip through the first few layers of paint on the sideview mirror. any suggestions/prep tips will be appreciated

Sounds like you have plain old peeling paint, not "orange peel." A lot of cars have orange peel - look at any newer Chevy pickup and you will see a fine example of orange peel. It's just a rough finish to the paint that can be the result of a few different things when the paint was sprayed. It's called orange peel because the finish resembles that of an orange rind - rough, uneven, yet shiny.
Is it the gas door or around the gas door? If it's just the gas door you should be able to take the whole door off and either take it to a body shop or do it yourself. You'll have to feather the edge of the peeling paint with sandpaper - probably 240 or 320 grit, then go over the whole area to be painted with a fine scotch brite pad. Clean with a tack cloth and PPG DX330, seal, prime, block, scotch brite, tack cloth, DX330, paint.
As said, cracked paint is not "orange peel". What you are describing is a cracked clear coat. The only was to fix cracked paint/clear coat, is to remove it. The paint job on the C4 is a poly based base coat/clear coat. The color you see is the base coat. The clear,... well you can guess.
How do you fix any paint,.... sand, primer, sand, base coat, sand, clear coat, sand, buff/polish.
If you are unsure as to compatibility of the paint with SMC - Don't sand past the OE primer. You should not need to sand that far anyway, just remove the clear in the affected areas, prime and repaint.
Note: If you have never painted a car before, you may want to reconsider this project. Blending paint due to time/color fade as well as the nature of spraying is not easy.
