Just wondering if using Silicone fluid would be a better choice than the GM DOT3 fluid when replacing slave unit? It seems silicone would be easier on the rubber parts and not be as prone to moisture absorbtion (my vette sits in the garage in the winter time).
Also has anyone actually drilled out the restriction in the slave unit and noticed a quicker clutch reaction?
Thanks !
JasonL you are correct, that was what I was referring to. I originally saw a post on the ZR1 forum long ago.
I just replaced the slave on my 96 GS and was wondering if the mod was worth the bother. I did not end up doing it.
My very knowledgable corvette friend (worked on Vettes since they first rolled off the assy. line) told me it is a restriction but GM does not want to Shock the rest of the drive line under severe driving (power shifting)!
h rocks, my 96 had the braided line stock. Do you know of anyone using the silicone fluid? I pulled my old slave unit apart and found rust in the bore as well as scratches at the top going ~2 inches down the bore! The rubber seal is worn too (naturally).
My thought was that silicone would prevent moisture from entering the system!
When I TRANS-planted a 96 ZF6 in my 84 a while back...I used the recommended GM clutch Hyd fluid on the zfdoc web site...after reading that improper clutch action was the major cause of ZF meltdown...I went with everything he suggested...right down to the $7 a quart BMW synth fluid! didn't want to have to throw $2500 away!
Also- my 96 clutch fluid system came stock with the SS braided line...
Not sure if silicone would work, but since it is not hydroscopic ANY water in the system seems to collect, usually in an inoppertune place. My dad ate a couple of wheel cylinders due to rust in an antique car, others have had great luck with silicone in brake systems when starting with a totally dry system. I just re did the whole hydraulic sustem on my 93 and used the GM fluid mentioned on ZF Doc site.
