I am getting an awful pinging from the rear of the car....its not bearing or u-joints because i just replaced them. and i have hit 74K miles, so its time to change the diff fluid anyway. just how hard is it? there is no drain plug, and i don't want to just suck the fluid out of the fill hole...i wanna drain it totally, make a drain plug and button it all back up. I've heard that you can basically drill up through the botton bolt hole and "make" a drain. my problem is that there is ALOT of stuff in the way...how complex is this operation?
Its not hard at all. Buy a suction hose fron your local auto store and remove the fluid. Your manual will show the proper amount of fluid to install along with the limited slip.
"i don't want to just suck the fluid out of the fill hole...i wanna drain it totally"
i want to remove the rear cover of the diff and wipe it all out and make sure that all the crap is outta there...and that isn't possible by just sucking out the fluid from the top.
There is a kit sold by Corvette Clinic of Florida that allows you to drill a hold in the differential, drain out all the fluid and tap and install a drain plug. I have not done this yet as my kit has not arrived. It supposedly does not weaken the rear end and makes changing it easier. This is not exactly what you wanted as you mentioned opening the differential up and wiping the inside clean. I have not done this, so I can't comment. Do a web search for Corvette Clinic and look under their C4 solutions link for the kit.
Hope this helps a little.
