Default ECM, PCM, EDIT ??? Tuning!

As you know I'm new to this blower world.
I've been told you don't screw with chips with a blower.
Then, I'm cruising through some threads and I read about editing the computer. Tuning the PCM etc.
I know their talking about the computer but just what can and cannot be done to the computers on a stock 93 LT1.
Since I've never taken a vehicle to a dyno just what can they tune besides timing and adjusting the FMU?
Thanks
Herb

If you read this forum more often, you will learn a hell a lot more than "I have been told don't screw with chip with blower" Who ever told you that he/she don't have a clue how blower car works. After you spent a lot of $ on the blower and of course you want the most hp out of it. Therefore a new tune is a MUST. Vortech/ATI are selling SC kit for our car. Their ads say bolt on kit no need computer re-programming etc. But if you dyno your car you will find out that your car will lean out at upper rpm because your stock fuel curve, fuel map are not program linear with engine RPM. A stock fuel curve/fuel map and blower fuel curve/fuel map is DAY AND NIGHT.

Most kits are designed with the intent that its going on a bone stock engine with bone stock controls. If the end user don't mess with anything else generally things tend to work ok. But its best to take the car to a experienced tuner to get the AFR correct under boost. A FMU is just a bandaid when it comes to boost enrichment. Tuning the calibration is best left to someone that has a dyno that is able to load the car during part throttle and able to apply that load continuously for AFR monitoring and tuning. Most Dyno-Jets do not have a loading capability such as a Mustang Dyno. Some do have loading capabilities but it done with a crude mechanical method which amounts to basically a friction brake on the drum. Dynos equipped with electronic loading controls are the most accurate. Dyno Jet do offer a electronic eddy current loading device but there are very few of them out there. So check out your tuner and his gear before committing.
