Default Slight Backfire Problem After Breather Modification!

I cut my breather lid out and removed my mufflers and ran straight pipes. Now sometimes when I get on it, It will miss or have a slight backfire. It seems to be more common when it shifts into second gear at wot. A couple of weeks ago I had a code 32 (EGR) error. I have not had it lately though. Has anyone encountered this problem before? Seems to be some type of timing issue to me but I don't know. Also they started adding ethanol in our gas so I don't know if that could be an issue. I run 93 octane in my car and also add octane booster. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Switch brands of gas and stop running octane booster.

Higher octane fuels are harder to detonate. Your car will run just fine on premium and will not benefit from the booster so save the money. A stock LT1 also doesn't gain anything from the open air lid. It is only going to suck in as much air as the engine can use, no more. If you got an EGR code you might want to look into that. An EGR valve that is sticking open could cause the car to run like crap.

I only put the octane booster in to see if it would clear the miss/backfire up. I have switched to a gas with no ethanol and it is still occurring. I have read that cutting the lid and installing a K&N filter gives you an increase in performance on a stock motor. Are you saying it does not? I think I am going to try and trace down the EGR error code. I have 92,000 miles on it. New plat plugs. I believe every thing else on the motor is original equipment. Come to think of it.....a bolt backed out of a pulley locked the pulley up and burnt the serp belt into. All of this occurred at the same time so it is hard to isolate what may be causing it.

It has occurred after it has been warmed up also. I did not notice it before the mods. It is so much louder now that you can’t help but notice when it occurs. Now it is starting to miss while it is idling. I have had bad EGR valves in the past and they did not cause a backfire, but it did cause it to run rough and get terrible gas mileage. I read that code 32 could be a faulty ECM. I guess I just need to start trying to narrow it down. I was hoping someone would have a good place to start from. Thanks for the comments.

I noticed that when it misses while idling, the gauge lights go dim. Could it be the opti going bad?

The lights going dim certainly points to an electrical problem. The backfire could be due to an exhaust leak.

Did it start after you installed the plugs? Are the plugs Bosch platinums by chance?

Just reading your quote....I have bosch platinums and I have a slight back fire when I'm hard on it. It does not bother me but if it's wrecking something.......Why did you ask?
