I Am Looking For A Very Inexpensive Chip Programmer For My C-4 1988 That Does Not Have To Be Computer Related As My Laptop Is S-l-o-w!. Used Fine ...thanks!
THANKS FOR REPLY.........NAH, LOOKING FOR PROGRAMMER, NOT A CHIP......
Go with pocket programmer fron xtronics http://xtronics.com/memory/EPROM.htm
I don't know if your MAF system can use the Amtel AT29C256 chip.
With this chip you don't need an UV eraser.
GO to moates site.
Craig Maotes is your answer. http://www.moates.net/
send a mail to Craig and you will be very happy with him
Very quick to reply.
...you need a Craig Moates adapter in order to avoid to remove your stock chip from the memcal...
Plenty of these info are in the site

Thank You For The Replies. I Will Start Looking At The Links You Guys Have Supplied. Are Any Of These The Type That I Do Not Have To Remove The Chip?........essentially, That Is What I Am Lookig For. If Anyone Knows Of One Used, Let Me Know......thanks Again! :d
GREETINGS,
I JUST LOOKED AT THE LINKS YOU GUYS SENT ME. WOW! INFORMATION OVERLOAD. FROM WHAT I CAN MAKE OUT, WHAT LINKS YOU HAVE GRATIOUSLY SUPPLIED ME WITH, STILL REQUIRES THE USE OF A COMPUTER WHICH IS WHAT I AM LOOKING FOR.....OR AM I WRONG?
Are Any Of These The Type That I Do Not Have To Remove The Chip
Not from what I saw listed. Some of the EPROM emulators out there have trouble and are not suit for everyday use. They are though great tuning tools as long as you do burn a chip at the end for daily use. The Autoprom from Craig Moates that was recently released is worth looking into, but is pricey.
Da Mail Man, Do you work in a company that has a Electrical Engineering department?
These guy's usually have top level eeprom programmers laying around all over the place (hooked up to PC's).
Bring your chip and bin file in on a floppy, and sweet talk someone into letting you use one of them.
Cheap way to get started, and see if you like programming your own.
I had a tech (at work) lift my chip off and replace it with a socket, took him about 20 seconds.
You can buy eproms (m27128a) for the 88 from JDR or Jamco online for about $5.
Use Tunerpro http://tunerpro.markmansur.com/ for free to modify the bin files.
Greetings,
Unfortunately Not. I Saw Somewhere That There Is A Programmer That Gets Plugged In O The "socket" At The Dash On The Drivers Side That Will Store The Present Info. Then, It Aparently Goes Through A Series Of Questions Such As Shift Points, High Rev Limits, Etc.. Then, At The End, It Will Load Data Into Chip W/ou Uninstalling The Chip From The Car. Can't Rememberwhat It Was Or Even If I Could Afford It.
I used www.fasterproms.com for my 91 Firebird. They cost about $350 for the first time you use their service. They will burn it custom to your specs as close as they can get. You borrow their DIACOM, which is a datalogger, and take readings. You email them the readings and they send you another chip and so on till it is nuts on. Next time you want to repeat the procedure, it costs you $150. The best way to do the chip is with a dyno. In this case, the road is your dyno.

AGAIN, THANK YOU FOR YOUR RESPONSE. HOWEVER, AGAIN, I AM NOT LOOKING TO GET ONE BURNED OR TO BUY A CHIP OUTRIGHT OR ANYTHING. LOOKING FOR A NON-PC RELATED "PROGRAMMER" UTILIZING "NON-CHIP" REMOVAL. THANKS ANYWAY.
I understand now.
No, not for the old 165ecm's in an 88 (don't think).
Hypertech (and others) have hand held programmers for Lt1's, etc.
You plug it in, save the old program and download thiers through the OBDII plug.
Only way to program an 88, on the fly, is to use what they have outlined above (requires chip removal and modifications).

OH, I SEE. HOWEVER, ISN'T THAT A BIT HARD TO KEEP BUYING CHIPS TO SEE HOW IT WILL PERFORM IN ONES CAR? I MEAN, IF I WANTED HARDER SHIFTING OR WHATEVER, AND WAS NOT SATISFIED WITH IT, IT WOULD COST ME A FORTUNE AND "DOWN TIME" TAKING MY CHIP OUT, SENDING IT IT TO HAVE IT MODIFIED, THEN, TO REINSTALL IT HOPING THAT IT WOULD WORK.......
From: What did the 5 fingers say to the face? SLAP!!

Your 88 trans isn't computer controlled, so no amount of chip burning will change the firmness of the shifts. I think you should do a little more research about your car and develop a game plan on where you want to end up before you start messing with the chip.
Also, please take the Caps Lock off

AS FAR AS THE SHIFTS GO, I WAS MEERLY USING AN EXAMPLE, EVEN THOUGH NOT CORRECT FOR THIS APPLICATION. AS FAR AS THE CAPS GO, I AM RECOPERATING WITH A BROKEN HAND FROM A CAR ACCIDENT THAT CLAIMED THE LIFE OF MY 1981 CORVETTE SO, BE PATIENT!
I WORKING ON GETTING A SERVICE MANUAL BUT, MEDICAL BILLS COME FIRST!

What a coincidence. I am recovering or trying to recover from a concussion that gives me daily headaches. Some *#$#%(@$ woman drove across my path and didn't stop like she should have and totaled my 91 Firebird. Now I have to make modifications to the tranny which is beefed up and get a Holley Stealth Ram from Grumpyvette to make it work in my 91 Vette.
I didn't know why you wanted to reporgram your EPROM seeing as how it is so cheap to get it dialed in by someone else with tons more experience than we have. As to the down time, there is none. They sent me the chip within a week. That was pretty good but not perfect. Got them readings and they sent me another in the mail. Now I swap it out. This goes on till it is perfect. Just something for you to consider.
As to the software, if you buy the old cheap ones, it will take you time to program in assembly code. I have seen the newer ones that you can make a 3 dimensional graph and alter it any way you want. Those are expensive but easier to use.
