I wanted to start this thread to specifically ask about removing the EGR system since mine is already half way there... My manifold already has the EGR bracket removed and welded shut. I also only have half of the EGR pipe. I was thinking about just removing it for now since it just got it's inspection sticker. That would give me a bit of time to get it all back together. It's got a hacked hole on the exhaust for a rubber hose to go to the EGR system. The rubber hose tends to melt. Gee, I wonder why... But, it got it past emissions... Are there any downsides to removing the system? I assume I just need to block off the egr port on the mainfold and ????

I recently installed a superram on my '86. I used block off plates for both the egr valve itself, and where the egr tube connects to the intake manifold. There are no bad side effects from doing this. My car hasn't thrown a single code.
Yeah, I put a screw with a flanged head in the EGR pipe on the exhaust side to effectively block the hot exhaust from entering the manifold. The flange of the bolt fit right down in the recess. I just pulled the vacuum line to the EGR and put a bolt in the line. No codes. Runs fine.
You can get the block-off plates from TPIS, www.hotrodlane.cc and probably accel, off the top of my head. Some guys have made them on their own as well.
i've been wanting to do this on my 86 but was afraid i'd need to get a custom chip burned to keep the check engine light off. but according to you guys, i won't need to?

So removing the EGR won't affect how the engine runs at all? I thought its purpose was to add some non-combustible gasses to lean out the fuel mixture a bit, and also reburn a small portion of the exhaust products. So wouldn't you be running a bit rich then? I'm at the point where I need to decide whether to remove the EGR pipe from my 86 and block it, or figure a way to weld something to my new headers. Is it necessary to disconnect the solenoid if you do block the pipe?
Thanks.

The egr is there to help keep combustion temperatures down under certain conditions. (don't quote me though)
If you terminated the tube you could leave the solenoid as is. I removed all the stuff to clean up the engine.
