My 85, had a very rough idle, almost sounded like it was gonna stall once in a while. So i started replacing/cleaning stuff- one at a time so i'd be able to figure out what the culprit was. Anyway, after i changed the fuel filter; the idle is very smooth. My vette has never sounded this good at idle. Even the fuel pump sounds like its under alot less stress when it engages when you first turn the key to on. Makes me think my old one was half clogged. So if anyone out there has a bad idle- The fuel filter is a very cheap fix, and might be your problem
Just for the record, another "pump killer" is running the tank low. A couple of times won't hurt anything, but as a habit, it will take it's toll. I HATE to stop for gas. Consequently, I pack that ***** as full of gas as possible whenever I stop, and let it run as dry as I dare before I stop. That has caused me to buy more than my fair share of fuel pumps. The gasoline is a coolant to the pump. Running habitually or constantly with a very low tank, will measurably shorten the life of the fuel pump. A word to the wise.
Usually, as the filter plugs up, the system won't be able to meet the high speed demands. It is unusual for the idle to be the tip off that the filter needs servicing. The same is true of a failing pump.
