Default Replace air pump or?

The air pump on my 86 coupe is starting to make some noise. sort of a whining noise. I can still be turned by hand and doesn't seem to be seizing up at all. Should I replace or ride it out and see what happens, or is it worth getting an air pump eliminator for a little extra money. No emisions tests here.

I believe, I could be wrong, that you can "gut" the air pump.

I know many have gone with the eliminator, but it sort of concerns me to do that if you don't gut the CAT.

Seems like the air to the Cat should help keep it from getting clogged.

Not sure I helped but it's a bump

The elimnator kit will allow you to clean up the engine compartment, some. I bought a rebuilt for about $30.00, exchange. You could take it apart and knock the vanes out if it and try to lube the noisy bearings. Luckily, in good shape, it consumes very little power.

Hey ...hi welcome...your have several options open to you:

1....you could build your own with the infromation here on the forum
2.... replace with new air pump
3... gut the air pump
4... "ride it out and see what happens"

if it was my choice i would build one. it seems that is the choice of many forums members..here is an example of the one i have made, BTW i made several more just in case someone is interested:

I didn't spend the $100 or so dollars for the kit, I just eleminated it and used a shorter belt. I gutted the pump and just left it there for mounting purposes. Of course, I guess the TPI system you can't let the belt run directly in front of the motor either.

I gutted mine out and kept the engine compartment looking stock yet no loss of power.

I would cut the metal hose going to the cat and plug it up. You don't have to gut your cat for that.
