I have a '89 that requires retuning from time to time and it would be great if I could keep it up to date personally. After reading thru the information on this site and its links I think I will try to do this myself. I already have a laptop and diacom software. I guess my biggest question is what data is needed from diacom to optimize spark timing and fuel delivery and what is done in say the RT Tuner to make it happen? Is their a link somewhere that details the values and tables enough where it could get me started without being to dangerous? Also, is the pocket romulator worth using rather than the chip R&R method or is this really not necessary?
What a great website. Just found it the other day.
I just use Tuner Pro and the moates adapters including his USB burner to make my own chips. I suspect there may be more you can do with the realtime tools, but since I already had a scan tool this was the most cost effective option for me. Why do you have to re-tune? Are you modifying your engine frequently?
Yes I am new to this and need some help. I have a '89 corvette with basically 10.5:1 comp TPIS ZZ409 cam, miniram, headers, etc.
I have Diacom software with a pocket romulator and a moates chip setup. Maybe this winter I will redo the lower end (383ci) and add a procharger so I would like to get comfortable with the tuning first.
Also currently looking at a wide band 02.
I need some help with capturing data using diacom. Within the diacom program their is ALDL and Diagnostic modes. When are these modes best used? I guess I need to get BLM vs. RPM data but am not quite sure how to capture it. Can someone help me with this. Maybe their is a link somewhere that will explain it.
I have no hands on experience with Diacom, but I suspect it is similar to other scan tools and ALDL would be the mode you want to scan the ECM while running. You should be able to save this data in some type of delimited format so you can replay the data later and see what is going on with your A/F, timing and other sensor outputs.
Do your homework first by reading all the sticky posts on tuning using your BLM values, knock retard, IAC etc. Then tune with injector constant, fuel pressure, and timing table adjustments to start. Check out thirdgen.org for a plethora of information on TPI tuning.
If I remember correctly you can do this on the fly with the romulator so once you get the hang of it you will be able to make several quick adjustments while testing/tuning.
