Default Exhaust question for 85

I'm going to buy the TPIS headers. I am also replacing the cat and the rear Y pipe/mufflers. Since there will be nothing left from the 85 exhaust, can I buy the headers for an 86 and use the 86 catalytic converter? Is there an advantage in using the 86 converter?

Depends if the 86 convertor bolts to the front Y pipe like the 85's.

Darth, consider buying the headers uncoated if available and have jet hot coat them. Their coating did not hold up for me.

I'm interested too.

I was going to buy the Hooker headers and their front Y pipe which is meant for a '86 slip on cat. converter. My car too is a '85 and I was thinking of just going to an all '86 exhaust.

Only bad thing is I would have to ditch my almost new cat. converter and since my rear Y is welded to my Flowmasters might have to replace them too.

Well, you're going to need a FRONT y-pipe to mate up to those headers, so yes the entire thing will be being replaced and you can do whatever you want.

For sure I did just that, I took my 85 stuff off and went all 86 with the rear y-pipe, front Hooker y-pipe, Hooker headers and a bullet muffler in place of the cat.

The rear y-pipe on the 85 is the kicker because of the flange.

Sweet ld85
Did you weld a O2 bung in the hooker Y?
I'm going to need to do that. I don't want the emissions header.

Side question

Of course I'm going to get the header jet hot coated but what about the hooker Y pipe? Should I have them coat that as well?

The only thing is having it shipped to me (for the O2 weld) and then shipping it back and forth to jet hot will be costly.

Yes I drilled a hole and welded it into the header collector

Where can I find hooker headers? I need to keep all emissions.

I had jet hot coat the headers and y pipe. The difference in heat under the car is significant.

If you are looking at hooker headers - call jet hot. They sell new hookers coated at a very reasonable price.

Yeah, scrap all the 85 specific stuff. If I were you, I'd buy a universal 3" Carsound cat for $60, weld flanges to it, then buy an equal length tube, weld flanges on that (for test pipe), and adapt everything to bolt up as so. It's much cheaper, and better, to buy mandrel bends from summit, and take em to a local shop and have them put everything in place. The cookie-cutter exhaust systems are a ripoff, and don't always fit well, and use slip-fit connections with Ghetto clamps.
