Default Quick Brake Line Tech Tip

I didnt know this information when I started my C5 upgrade but now I do and it would have probably saved me a bunch of time.

This mostly applies to (in my circumstance) swapping the rubber brake lines to stainless braided lines. The connection point of hard line to the flexible line.

My neighbor whos a mechanic told me Snap On line wrenches are much better quality than sears craftsman or the taiwan brands found in auto parts stores.

Also he told me when removing the line connections to smack them with a rubber mallet. It seems the instant shock will snap the line loose. My slow and steady pressure hand removal rounded one off and the other one I couldnt break looose. I smacked the 2 I was having trouble with and it worked perfect. Don't lightly smack it, give it some what for .

PB blaster (which i've seen mentioned on the forum) is best to be used and applied at least 24 hrs before work.

Lastly a Vise Grip (i think its referred to as a 10LW) works great if you have started rounding off the corners. It has a triangular bite that works on the flats. Heres a pic..

Pass it along

Good Tip on the hammer. I'll try that next time. I always use those wrenches with the extra claws on the front of them for brake lines.

Thanks for the tip. Question, where and exactly how are you smacking the connections?

I will put a backup wrench on the rubber line side. And use a line wrench or vise grip on the flare nut of the hard line side.

While holding the backup wrench with my left and and a left finger on the line wrench to keep it from falling. With my right hand, take the mallet and smack the line wrench or vise grip where you would be holding it.

Hope you can visualize that from my description..

That vise grip looks like a cool tool and I don't have one.
Guess I gotta go out and get me one

Where do you find them?
