I recently picked up a 91 convertible with 26,000 miles. Lately I have noticed a small amount of coolant (about the size of a nickel) sitting directly below the thermostat and also further back along the top of the engine. It doesn't appear to be coming from the thermostat gasket or from the hose. I am watching the level of coolant and it doesn't seem to be losing much at all. No puddles on the garage floor either. Any ideas on where this could be coming from?
Mine was the waterpump, reach under the shaft housing and see if the weep hole is wet as soon as you stop the engine. If so replace the waterpump.
HAVE A GREAT DAY!!!!!!!!!
Well, I thought it was a good amount of work, but I enjoyed it. I did mine in the wintertime so time was not an issue (good thing the way I work!), also did a lot of cleaning. Others can do it in 2 days including drying time. There are procedures out there so it’s not really that hard, you learn a lot about the topside of the motor. As others have stated, rule all else out first. I once had an upper radiator hose leaking at the thermostat neck, which masked itself in somewhat the same fashion. I stated the intake manifold because it seems at some point in its life the original gasket will leak.
I’ll add that the way I confirmed it was my intake was letting it get good and hot while idling in the driveway, eventually I saw a little tiny geyser spouting up in that area between the intake and block. Before that moment I wasn’t sure where it was coming from.
