The car has become difficult to start. I have to give it some gas and hold it to keep it at about 700 RPM in Park. If I let off, it will die. When put in drive, I have to keep my foot on the gas pedal to keep it alive. After about 5-10 minutes, the car runs fines and I can use the gas and brake normally without it dying. This sounds really strange to me. Any ideas on where to look? Perhaps a dying TPS? Or a sensor giving out?
Also, if I turn it off after it starts running good, it will go back to having trouble staying running.
Pull the throttle body and give it a good cleaning. Don't forget to remove the IAC and scrub the pintel, seat and spring. That thing gets pretty nasty.
I was also thinking there might be a problem in the Cold Start Valve. The problem only happens when the car's in open loop. Once in closed loop, the idle is fine.
I'm having the same problem with my car right now.
The only thing I have not done is kept my foot on the gas and put it in gear and have not gotten it to the running fine stage.
Please post the solution when it is figured out.
Are you getting any code? engine light?
Typical bad IAC valve symptoms. Cleaning the IAC valve has never worked long term for me. Clean the TB and replace the IAC valve. I started a post to ask what causes the IAC to go bad since I've had to replace it several times. No reponses yet.
Could be the ECM. I checked and replaced a bunch of sensors when mine did that and they didn't help at all. A rebuilt ECM from Autozone for $90ish exchanged fixed it.
Does anyone know, Is it possible that a blocked CAT could do the same?
I have a hunch that my CAT is blocked and this is one of the symptoms.
Just a hunch, I could be way off.

The cat was blocked in my 85... I didnt get any of those systems. The only thing it seemed to do was rob me of alot of power, and Make some pretty awful exhaust leak noises... if that helps you at all
I got a couple of code 32's last summer on a long trip with the A/C cranked up in the heat. It will usually set off if the engine runs warm for an extended period of time. (As in over 200 degrees.) But it hasn't done it since. I know the 32 has something to do with the EGR, but it hasn't thrown any codes yet. I'll try a new IAC today and report back.
Just thought I'd post my solution. I removed and thoroughly cleaned the throttle body, and swapped in a new IAC. Cars running good again and it runs a little better off idle.
