I have had the service engine light on for a while now. The code is I think 42 anyway it is the knock sensor code. One person told me that when this code is logged and the light is on it retards timing and causes lower engine power. My engine seems to run strong so I really have not bothered to fix it. Any thoughts on this?

As a general rule, knock sensor tells ecm to retard timing till knock goes away, so depending on the freguency of knock sensor in puts you could be running with an 8 degree or more spark retard.
What year is your car?
System also includes an Electronic spark control module and on many l 98's these things are overly sensitive and should be replaced with less sensitive. I have an 88 and replaced ESC with NAPA ESC 313 from a mid 80's Malibu.
This is a Gorden Killebrew recommended modification
The car is an 87 with only mild modifications. Also I replaced the ECM with a new one from Napa but the on specified for the car. I still got the code. I even tried using lower octane fuel but still get the light Wayne
