I have a simple question, where is the fuel filter located at on my 85? And another question is, is it easy to change out the fuel injectors. I had my entire intake polished and it didn't look like an easy job, how do those injectors come out, do they just pop in with suction or are they held down by the fuel rail ? One more question--I possibly have to replace the injectors--what size should I go with to match my new performance--heres what I have, Ram Air(front plate), hypertechthermo master chip, no smog pump, no cat, headers, helix 1inch spacer between throttlebody. Just a stock throttle. Thanks
On my 91 the fuel filter is on the passenger side in front the door follow the fuel line, it will bend up and you will see it on the frame rail there will be a heat shield around it. There should be 2 10mm bolts holding the shield. I think the fuel filter nuts were 17 mm but don't qoute me on that. I would think injectors are not that hard. I think you might have to pull the upper plenum and runners to get the fuel rails out.
As 96zride indicated, the filter is on the passanger side bolted to the frame rail with one bolt (I believe) in the strap which holds the filter in place. I replace mine every 10,000 miles. To do this jack up the car and place on stands. Start the car and pull the fuel pump fuse (panel is on right side of dash when you open right door). The engine will stall out from lack of fuel. This releases the pressure in the system. Unscrew the fittings to the fuel filter and pull the filter. There may be some fuel loss even with the pressure released. Make sure you install the filterthe correct way, filter is usually marked with an arrow showing direction of fuel flow. Tighten everything back up. Install the fuse. Start the engine and check for any leaks. Your done!
The injectors for a 85 stock is 24 pound. I replaced mine recently with Accel without a problem. You should check Summit or Jegs for costs on the Accel if that is the direction you want to go. The Ford injectors are rated lower than actual. So a 24# will actually flow higher....not sure if you are looking at 2-4 pounds more. Suggest that you install an adjustable fuel pressure regulator when you change injectors. **JUST BE SURE to label every hose and wire when you start to take things down. A few pictures help also. This is not a difficult job to replace the injectors. They push into the hole in the intake and are held in place with a "O" ring. Be sure to put oil on the ring to help it slide in place. The injectors are held into the fuel rail with a "C" clip that rotatesto lock or unlock the injector in place. There is also a "O" ring on the upper part of the injector that slips into the fuel rail. Put it all back together, start engine and check for fuel leaks. You will probably want to reset idle. I found that my idle jumped 200 RPM with the new injectors since I was getting better fuel flow. MPG also increased. Just take your time and all will be okay.
I have an 85- you dont even need to jack the car up, you should be able to get to it fine, I did. Just make sure all the power is off, and that you have released the fuel pressure. your filter is located on the passenger side just behind the wheel, and to the right of the starter.
One other item on the filter change. It's a good idea to remove the gas cap after the engine dies from fuel starvation. That will release the last of the pressure.
Ok cool...thanks guys, this don't sound tough at all...I have the greenwood parts, so jacking it up is out of the question, I'll have to figure out how to lift it a different way....
