Well- there is no "real" cap and rotor on an opti (that I know of) it is one unit that plugs into the front of the engine and driven by the cam...

I just got done doing this on my 94...the Right Hand Side can be done without really removing much- the Left Hand side is another story...this is what I did: Drive the car up on ramps- remove the 4 bolts holding the AC compressor- take off the drive belt and flop the AC up toward the front out of the way...you can now see where the plug wires route...you have to climb under the car to see the drivers side of the Opti...so its plug it into the plug, crawl under and plug it into the Opti...and so on...

I used Taylor 8MM Red wires...looks nice! but I cut my hands all up!

Take your time, and drink a few beers...

Balancer has to come off on the '96, and it's probably the same as yours.

Yes you have to remove it. You can buy a cap and rotor. You can buy the distibutor. You cannot buy the cover. You have to buy the complete setup to get the cover. Kind of crazy because the cover has the gaskets on it. If you have the vented type 96+ the cover comes with the cap and rotor.

If you're changing the distributor cap the ballancer has to come off....it can be difficut...sometimes it's seized to the hub. ...it's not a standard cap either. It's held on with three small external torks fastners and you need a deep torks socket to remove them. If you're replaceng the cap be sure the gasket seals and use silicone ignition grease on the plug wire sockets and the low voltage plug on top.
good luck

You need an E4 torx socket. It is made just for that. Good luck on finding it! I tried every parts store around. No go. Had to go borrow one from my mechanic buddy. I ended up replacing the whole thing so I did not need it.
